A helpful reminder ... of things to concentrate on when about to take your practical driving test

DRIVING LESSONS

Always regard the first 10 minutes of your driving lessons as:

‘The Warm-Up’.

The reason you should do this is because if something doesn’t quite according to plan during the first 10 minutes of your driving lessons, it’s all too easy to allow your driving to escalate into making more and more mistakes.

To a certain extent this is what the examiner will also be observing. It’s not so much that you make an error of judgement, as long as it’s not serious or dangerous, but that you can ‘take it in your stride’ and not allow it to escalate into more and more errors of judgement.

If you allow yourself to be dwelling on your mistake(s) and go on to make even more mistakes it would mean that you are lacking in self-confidence of your ability to be safely and competently in control of your car.

What is done, is done! You can’t change history! Even if you were to drive perfectly for the rest of your life, you have still made mistakes up to this point. Learn from them rather than dwell on them.

Now imagine this:

Imagine a driver bumped into you at the next junction. You ask them why they bumped your car and they reply that they stalled at the last set of traffic lights! What has that got to do with them bumping into you? NOTHING at all! So keep focused on what you are doing at this moment in time…be like a dog…and live in the present…don’t dwell on what happened a few moments ago or what will happen in a few moments time.

There is a time and place to reflect on any of your errors, but not whilst you are still continuing to drive in traffic.

Just two questions if you make a mistake:

* What DID I do?

* What SHOULD I have done?
