A helpful reminder ... of things to concentrate on when about to take your practical driving test

TRAFFIC LIGHT SENSORS

It’s always good to be aware of traffic light sensors when driving and to understand how they work.

Traffic light approach: There are sensors in the ground on the approach to all traffic lights. The sensors do look like the remains of some roadwork repairs. Often they are in the shape of diagonal oblongs or are in a diamond shape.

Most traffic lights are either on a timer or based on volume of traffic. If they change based on volume of traffic, they will use the traffic light sensors to help determine when to change. This is why you should always try to keep up with the traffic flow whereby you will be more likely to make it through the traffic light junction safely.

You may also notice that on some traffic light junctions at busy peak times you have to wait for quite a long time before your light changes to green, and other quieter, often alter at night, your wait may be much less. The reason then is because the volume of traffic is much less.
