A helpful reminder ... of things to concentrate on when about to take your practical driving test

DRIVING TEST – FOCUS

Whilst driving on your driving test it is very easy to wonder how you’re doing and perhaps try to take a sneaky look at the Examiner’s marking sheet. But it probably won’t make much sense unless you’ve really studied one or received one after failing a previous driving test.

The serious, dangerous and more minor driving faults tick boxes are very close together and to see them properly would mean no longer concentrating on the task of driving which you should be giving your full attention to.

All the time you’re driving on your driving test and also after you’ve passed your driving test you should be keeping yourself mentally occupied with the task of driving safely, competently and under full control.

As you approach busy situations, junctions, roundabouts, dual-carriageways etc you will be mentally occupied. But when you’re driving along a clear straight road with no apparent hazards or potential hazards it is all too easy to try to look at the Examiner’s marking sheet.

Instead as you drive along a clear straight road keep yourself mentally occupied by checking your mirrors, check your speed, check your road position and then check your mirrors, check your speed, check your road position etc. Keep doing this until you reach the next situation which requires more thought such as the next road junction or roundabout.

By doing this you will be keeping yourself up to date with what other vehicles are around you, if your speed increase or drops too much you can correct it, and by checking your road position constantly if you are out of position it will only be for a brief moment.

Remember to keep yourself mentally occupied and focus on the task of driving.
